£60ish for gaskets
Replacement head (yet to be confirmed but id assume about £80)
M8 x 1.0 Thread Tap £5
Other crap like brake cleaner, gasket maker etc £20ish
The big cost would have been labour! thankfully i avoided that

Well done, pleased you got there in the end and found it was what I suggested it was 7 months ago It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The drivers side cam (off side) drives the near side cam, so when the chain breaks the off side is not affected, the near side cam stops, usually with a crunch. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I'm still trying to determine what side to strip down first after this happening:
http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?p=531871#531871
(tensioner mount failure on the oil pump casing)
Stuck it all back together including oil pump, timing belt, tensioner, set timing using flywheel locking pin method, put all the gubbings back on then hand cranked it, all seemed OK at this point, all marks came back to meet inline, stuck timing pins back in and all seemed OK so decided to to start with key and seems as if wants to start but was told this maybe due to valves bent so not enough compression to start engine.
Thoughts? what to try next, check for bent valves, head(s) off, what side to check first?

Cheers.... guide on how compression test is done, point me to previous posts maybe? I have read elsewhere compression testing is a nightmare to do.

Take injector out, replace with diesel compression testing gauge, crank engine(do not start engine), read gauge pressure, release pressure from gauge, remove gauge and move to next cylinder.
I would have thought if you've got a bent valve you would be able to tell by the sound as it is being cranked over, it would also run on as few as 3 cylinders if everything is correct on those 3 cylinders, i.e. Off side bank. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
