OK cheers for compression testing advice.

As far as knowing the noise of bent valves in an engine, I have no idea, not experienced it before. But what I can tell you is when I crank engine by key it has a 'healthy' sounding turn over from starter but just seems that there is no fuel getting through. I tested this by undoing a nut from the fuel rail and turning by key very briefly and fuel was present. As for a noise when turning over by key, there doesn't seem to be any clanking or indeed and other horrible sounding noises at this stage. Would you expect there to be more noise if valves bent in your experience? I kind of get what you are saying about the car running on 3 cylinders, it's almost getting to that stage when cranking over but just doesn't quite want to go that far, if that makes sense Thumbs Up

Have you primed the fuel system correctly?
If a valve is bent depending how badly, there will be no compression on that cylinder obviously, when cranking you may notice a difference in the speed and sound when that cylinder/s is on compression stroke, i.e. The engine will develope a strange rhythm.

The only write up I found on fuel priming was to press the small valve (similar to a tyre valve) on top and in the middle of the engine next to the oil filter. I pressed this until fuel seeped out, but it wasn't high pressure flowing when pressing this valve in. Would this be the correct method?

You need a steady flow without air bubbles, turn the ignition on and listen and wait for the intank LPP to stop running, turn the ignition off and repeat 3 times, you should then have a steady flow without air at the shrader valve.

The Shrader valve must be closed whilst priming and only opened to check for a steady flow.
 It can when others can't,

Tried your advice and still not wanting to start, for a split second I thought it was going to fire into life Rolling with laughter , but that was probably more wishful thinking. Anyway doesn't seem to want to start at this stage. Not sure where to go with this now apart from get the passenger side head off and hope that I see something that can be fixed. Thumbs Up

It took pull starting my D3 across a field for 5 minutes before i had enough fuel pressure built up for it to fire into life, they really really dont want to start after the system has been run dry, and standard cranking is rarely enough to do the job!

Thanks for the reply Lockey, unfortunately once I took the LH head off the cam chain had snapped.

So far have the head is off and I'm deciding whether to put on a 2nd hand head or to try and fit new cam chain and other bits that snapped off. What you think? Thumbs Up

sorry to hear that Sad personally, if you can get a second hand head and fit it, i'd recommend going that route for piece of mind. I was told by a buddy who works on D3's a lot that the valves in these heads are two pieces, the head and the shaft, and that they are welded together. so when they get a hit of a piston, they can weaken. he was saying the engine might run on for another few 1000 k's and the next thing you know the head can fall off the valve and make a real mess!
