On certain engines, if the pistons hit the valves, then the followers or the caps are designed to 'give' i.e break, to protect the valves/pistons from damage. In which case it is just a case of changing those parts.
Would it not be better to push those valves in to check that they return and are not bent.
Another way to check for bent valves is to stick a dial gauge on the top of the valve stem and measure it against a known good valve and see if there is any difference in length.
May save a lot of work.

No leave the turbo where it is.
I would try and leave the manifold on the car too.
Bolts can be undone once the EGR is removed thru the wheel arch

Yep, completely agree, it might be ok, but to be honest, i can get a known good head for peanuts so im just going to do a proper job and replace the whole lot while i have to opportunity

Even after draining the anti freeze coolant is still near the headgasket
When the head is removed some coolant goes down the oil way.
The coolant sinks to the bottom of the sump.
Initially I was a bit surprised to see orange coolant coming out when I loosened the sump plug
Anyway a good time to change the oil.
EDIT: THERE ARE COOLANT DRAIN PLUGS ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE IF YOU WISH TO USE THEM.
ONE ABOVE THE ALTERNATOR BRACKET
Note how many notches your headgasket has at the front, and buy a similar thickness one.
I managed to get all the gaskets off ebay for about £100 as a kit.
Alot of the kits are missing a cam seal though. (actually as your only removing 1 head you will have enough)

The above measurements can only be taken at tick over, anything above 900rpm gives a 999 reading.
Yeah i later realised this was an irrelevant figure, my guess is that the same applies when the rpm is too low, as it was with my engine due to it running on 3

On your replacement head check the threaded holes to ensure no bolts broken off.
In particular the fuel rail mount holes and rear belt tensioner.

Morning lads!
Just ordering gaskets today and am wondering a couple of things:
First off, my old head gasket had 3 tabs together and then one a bit further away, im assuming this is still a 4 tab gasket?
Secondly, im looking on paddock spares and nowhere is it mentioned that a particular gasket was for the left or right bank, are the gaskets suited to both banks?
Cheers!
