Don't think they are recessed, just think its gloss black and therefore an effect of the camouflage.
Also don't think its a split tailgate... think its rather hopeful.Sill protection - LED internal lights - LED reverse lights - boot liner - Dog Guard - Rock sliders

The spare wheel is underneath. Interesting. The RRS2 (and FFRR I think) have theirs inside the boot. An internal spare would be very difficult to access with a split rear tailgate as on the D3/4. Perhaps there's a clue there...Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Inside looks ok I quite like the range rover interior still can't tell on the tailgate if it does split i think its higher on one side to the other. This angle seems to show something a bit promising with the joint inline with bottom of the light?

If this car has a split tailgate then I'll eat hay with a donkey. It's a single piece unit.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green
What are you expecting to see? The car is still in disguise but it looks almost like it's not. There must be enough still hidden for LR to make a proper launch of it.
I'm still utterly bemused as to what you guys are seeing that you think prevents a split tailgate? Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC

The outline of the tailgate aperture is now abundantly clear; every possible line for a potential split is covered, to some extent, with continuous camouflage. Even the "Vision Concept" (basically a D5, with different mirrors and door handles and the ubiquitous concept car reverse hinged rear doors) shows a single piece tailgate
I can completely understand the wishful thinking, but I'm really not sure what more evidence is needed

I think we can take it that the horizontally split tailgate is an anachronism from when the Discovery was an equally practical, but more modern, alternative to a Defender.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

I get what your saying but if i was in charge of camouflaging and hiding the final "ta-da" features on the test cars i would have the talgatite electronically or mechanically disabled so the people driving can't accidentally open it in public and make sure the camo wraps over the real lines.
Well thats the way i work and its also me still wishfully thinking MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

It strikes me that it is a case of surely it has to be some sort of split tailgate, otherwise looking at these latest pictures we have, anyone over a certain relatively low height isn't going to fit under that entire tailgate opening in one piece!!!!!
It's not wishful thinking, just getting back to basic certainties in a scenario where deception is the name of the game. I'm not saying it doesn't have a single piece tailgate, only that we still cannot know it as a fact or thus have reason to think it given the circumstances.
It looks like the Disco Vision because LR told us it would - therefore, we can't consider any given aspect of resemblance to be confirmation.
We can see the outline of the tailgate opening. We can't see that there is not a divide in the tailgate. We can't see the entire shape of the lower tailgate. Lastly, even if we could see it, we don't know that this tailgate will be the same as per the final vehicle.
The best way to hide something is to stop people from looking in the first place - I doubt it's a coincidence that the car looks like it's as good as revealed and very much as expected.
If we aren't certain of something about it, we cannot even lay any probability on it. There are no safe assumptions to be made. Current: Discovery 3 06MY (55 reg) HSE Auto Zambezi Silver Allisport Fast Road Intercooler, V8 Brakes, Silicone IC Hoses, EGRs Blanked, Remapped, De-Cat pipe, FBHIC
