If you do not manage I have an actuator that I have replaced. Seems to work well but two of the wires are cut.
Cheap.

Disco_Mikey, I take my hat off to you.
Yes, it was really jammed and I had to use a feck off large bar. However, I had to lift the body off again to get the engine out to reposition the crank sensor ring correctly and did it then. For the life of my I can't see how you manage to do it in place with the body on. But you are the man...
Took the time to replace the brake lines at the same time. £40 for the pair.
Thanks,

Hello DM/all
My EPB is jammed on - brake seems to be stuck on one side of the car, possibly disintegrated shoes inside the drum.
I can't release with the emergency manual release - even with two people with a 6' bar on a hook pulling up on the cable.
I gave the handbrake cable some slack on the offending side at the drum by removing the circlip and working the outer cable into the drum a bit, but that didn't help.
Would trying to wind in the brass rod inside the module help do you think? I assume it's wound hard in against it's stop.
Any other suggestions gratefully appreciated.
cheers
Bdw

Hi Mickey, could you give me some advice please?
I had the screeching and had to manually disengage the EPB. I have had new shoes fitted and the mechanic tried your engage method but it failed.
He said he managed to rewind the actuator and when he put an external current through it, it worked a treat every time, however, when he reconnected the cars supply to it, it worked 4/5 times but then stopped again. Red flashing light, with amber and warning sound when the EPB button is lifted. The amber light and sound goes once the car is switched off and resets.
Nothing happens when I try and put the handbrake on apart from the amber light and warning sound coming on.
Any idea what it may be please, I don't really want to but an actuator if possible?
Many Thanks

Firstly thank you Disco Mikey and everyone who posted with their experiences and tips
This is my first post as I’m usually on the air-cooled VW forums but now it’s my turn to give something back.
My 2010 D4 has been extremely reliable for 137,000km without so much as a fault or warning light. Battery died without warning 5 years to the month after it was built, which I thought was pretty good. Just the odd occasion when the Sat Nav would revert from km’s to miles – yearning for the mother country.
While working out of town recently and ducking out for some lunch; these things never happen at a convenient time, the EPB screeched for the first time ever and jammed on. I was stuck . Couldn’t find the emergency release in the manual which is under the cup holders in a D4 – Google is my friend.
Didn’t pull it the emergency release hard enough at first . Rang the dealer – “Needs to be pulled with the strength of 10 men”. I was free but stuck with a Flashing EPB symbol and red warning light after instinctively trying to apply the EPB again when I parked.
TIP ONE – Pull the EPB fuse or place tape over the EPB switch immediately after pull the emergency release, to stop it being applied again and jamming more tightly.
Rang a Land Rover specialist to get a price for repair, said they charged $2000 for the last repair/replacement as they claimed the unit was useless once the emergency release was pulled. What a crock of …..
Read Disco Mickey’s post and it seemed straight forward enough as I had access to a friend with a hoist and every conceivable tool I might need and I have pretty good mechanical skills having restored several classic cars.

TIP TWO – This repair is not for the faint hearted and will require PERSEVERANCE, hands the size of a 5 yr old, arms of an Orangutan and strength of King Kong.
Unfortunately I only read page 1 of this post and access to the front of the module from underneath is virtually impossible on my car as I have an electronic Locker rear diff.

I had to go in through the sides above the rear wheels. After 4hrs to remove the cover screws and another hour to prise it off without damaging it, I was starting to get very concerned I had bitten off more than I could chew. There was just no way I was ever going to unjam the brass bar from underneath or the side.
